Summary

Nick Goepper has 2 Olympic Silver and 1 Olympic Bronze in his closet and this year, in a totally new discipline, Nick is aiming to take his first gold medal home at the Milan Cortina Olympic Games. What's crazy is that 3 years ago, when Nick came out of retirement and told the world he was gunning for halfpipe gold, a lot of us thought it was a publicity stunt. But Nick knew exactly what he was doing and now, he's one of the front runners for gold.  Nick's whole life has been an underdog story and time and again and time and again and time and again and now a 4th time and again, Nick is off to compete on the biggest stage in the world.  It's part 3 with a guy who used to be my least favorite comp skier, who then became my favorite skier. Steve Stepp asks the Inappropriate Questions.

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:16.9

I'm your host, Mike Powell, and here we are.

0:19.5

It's mid-January, and I'm looking at the webcams at the summit at Snow Kwame, and it's 40 degrees there.

At 10 a.m. This is a weird season, and like other weird ones, the snow will come. Unless it's like that one year, but we don't like to talk about that 2014-2015 season around these parts. It's bad luck. Anyways, I haven't even

0:39.9

picked up my pass at the summit yet, but that's where I'll spend most of my season, because even

0:44.4

though I have an icon pass and Crystal has better skiing, the summit is so convenient. I can be there

0:49.8

in 45 minutes and on the hill in an hour after I leave my house. While it's easy to say that Crystal isn't that much further, by the time I get on the first lift, it's at least three hours after I've left my house on the weekends. And five or so hours in a car each day to ski doesn't really do it for me anymore. I mean, I love to ski and when I'm out there, I forget about everything else and experience of fun that you can't have in life unless you're so locked into something that you become part of it. It's a feeling that when I was younger pre-knee injury, I based my whole life around, and I was prepared to be a resort living ski bum for the rest of my life. But while I had a loose two-year plan, I was either lucky or unlucky enough to hurt my knee and be forced into getting

1:28.5

it fixed and finding a job in the real world. And the real world for me wasn't the real world as I

1:33.6

worked for K2. It was almost like a real business and it pumped out so much talent being athletes or

1:39.6

employees, but it was one of those places where you're getting like a master's in everything in snow and

1:44.7

beyond and you were learning so much on the job and learning from your mistakes and there

1:48.8

wasn't that many checks and balances so it was a great place to learn the industry and every

1:53.0

nook and cranny of it and I really appreciate that and what it did for my career because I've had

1:57.8

such a great run in skiing and you know who else has had such a great run in skiing. And you know who else has had such a great

2:01.2

run in skiing? Bodie Miller. He was one of the most talented athletes we've ever seen on snow. He did

2:06.5

everything his own way and it worked when ski racing. But when it was Bodie's turn to enter the real

2:11.8

world, well, he partnered with ski brands. And people don't really remember bomber skis or

2:17.1

cross-on skis because nobody skied them and nobody bought them. And they don't really remember bomber skis or cross-on skis because nobody

2:18.6

skied them. Nobody bought them. And they didn't really gain any traction in the industry. They got a

2:23.2

couple of articles when Bodie became a part of them and then they disappeared into oblivion.
