Summary

Gerry Lopez may be the most legendary guest I've ever had on the podcast, so it's fitting that I kick off Season 8 with Gerry. This OG surf god single-handedly invented what relaxed style looks like, and it was all inspired by his other passion, yoga. Gerry is famous for so many things, but his legacy will be remembered most for pioneering Pipeline on a board shorter than ever seen before, and then leaving it all for Oregon and snowboarding. On the podcast, we talk about Hawaii, localism, counterculture, Hollywood, and a lot more.

Welcome to season eight.

I haven't had a real job in eight years, and while that's kind of a dream, I feel like I've worked more over these past eight years than ever before in my life.

0:28.6

And when I think back to my old life, I miss the expense accounts, the parties, shooting

0:33.6

the shit with people at the office, and working with athletes, and that's about it, which is crazy, because I've had some awesome jobs in my day. And while I love the security of them,

0:42.8

there's nothing like doing your own thing. If you're on the fence about leaving something that

0:46.8

you're comfortable with to start something for yourself, don't think about it much longer.

0:50.5

Just say fuck it and make it happen. Life is short. It's not fair. And you have to play to have a

chance at winning. So don't be scared when it comes to work because there are plenty of other things

0:59.4

in life that are really scary. So take the leap and start your own thing. For me, while starting my

own thing is working, it doesn't solve any of my other problems other than what I do for work. And yes, I do love my job, but life,

1:11.8

that's a whole other thing. I mean, 2023 was the worst year ever. My wife beat cancer and then it

1:17.6

came back worse. We totaled one car, which we replaced. We bought a new roof and the process for that

1:22.6

was a total nightmare. We bought a new furnace. And to add insult to injury, I got a terrible case of COVID.

1:28.9

And that's just what I can remember off the top of my head.

1:31.5

The good news is that I'm going into 2024 with an open mind and hoping for the best.

I'm going to start the year off with a sober January, although I will drink a little bit at

the WSM trade show that I'm going to at the end of January.
