Summary

Nick Sargent is the SIA President who moved the business and sold its key revenue generator, the SIA Tradeshow...but he's so much more than that. Nick came up as a race tech on the World Cup, parlayed that into a gig managing Salomon's Olympic efforts, then it was on to Burton before taking over at the SIA. These days, Nick is navigating some challenging waters, and we talk about his key moves, the OR Show, consumer shows he's bought, and a lot more. Industry OG Chris Licata asks the Inappropriate Questions

Nick Sargent Show Notes:

3:30:  OR recap, growing up at Stowe, skiing, snowboarding, racing, and flunking out at Western State

12:30:  Back to Western State, learning ski tuning, Dynastar Race Service, and landing a job at Salomon around the Olympics

25:00:  Stanley:  Get 30% off site wide with the code drinkfast

Peter Glenn Ski and Sports:  Over 60 years of getting you out there

10 Barrel Brewery:  Buy their beers; they support action sports more than anyone

27:15:  Selling Burton, Jake Burton and his encouragement for the partnerships, and learning to snowboard in a couple of hours

35:00:  Pottery Barn/Burton, digital product, how does the ball get rolling at the SIA, and moving the SIA

43:30:  Rollerblade: Ski season may be over, but that feeling lasts all year with inline skating

Elan Skis:  Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better

45:30:  Are you the bad guy for moving the SIA, the loss of institutional knowledge, brand consolidation, and selling his revenue generator, the SIA Tradeshow, to OR

56:00:  The pandemic and buying the BEWI Shows, selling his consumer Snowbound Festival before having one, and how does selling SIA to OR benefit Winter Sports?

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:17.1

I'm your host Mike Powell, and as you are hearing hearing this I am off on my Alaska cruise.

0:21.6

I've been busy booking excursions, meals and shows and it should be the trip of a lifetime.

0:26.6

To tell you the truth, I've never wanted to go on a cruise before.

0:29.6

Being stuck on a boat for a week with 3,000 other people has never sounded fun.

0:34.6

But I'm going and I'll tell you, while I can't wait to see Alaska,

0:38.4

I'm most excited about the food on the boat. My plan is to try to eat as much crab and lobster

0:43.4

as possible, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is what I'm going to eat. As far as drinks go,

0:49.0

we have the unlimited package, so with all the time I should have on my hands at sea,

0:53.8

I'll be drinking my fair share,

0:55.3

I'm sure. So while I've never thought I was a cruise guy, I'm doing it, and I'm pumped to see

1:00.2

Alaska with my dad, brother, sister, and son. It's going to be some great bonding time. And I'm bummed

1:05.4

that my wife can't make the trip, but she only gets so much vacation time and she's going to Mexico on a girl's trip in August for her 40th birthday,

1:12.4

so she's skipping this one. What I'm least excited for on this trip is COVID. I have a feeling

1:17.7

that it's going to be on the ship and I anticipate getting it by Thursday or Friday. And even though

1:22.3

everybody will be tested 72 hours before we board, this boat has super spreader potential, so wish me luck.

1:29.1

Another event with super spreader potential was outdoor retailer, and my guest this week is one

of the COVID casualties. And when I say that, I mean Nick Sargent, the current president of the

1:39.3

SIA, got COVID at the OR show and lived a podcast about it. I'm not going to spoil anything about the show,

1:45.7

as this is a good one and an important one to the ski and snowboard industry, as SIA was once
