Summary

Josh Dueck is an inspiration.  A working-class kid from Kimberley, BC, Josh took skiing as far as he could afford to before becoming a coach.  His coaching career was cut short due to a life-altering injury that put him in a wheelchair and eventually on Paralympic Podiums.  It’s a heavy story, and I ask all the questions that people want the answers to, but were afraid to ask.

Josh Dueck Show Notes:

3:30:  Chef De Mission, Kimberley, BC, and getting into skiing on his own via a paper airplane contest

11:00:  His crew on the freestyle team, his face piercings and look, partying, and the BC Team

14:00:  The end of moguls, coaching, working with the future of skiing, and making them better

21:00:  Stanley: Get 30% off site wide with the code drinkfast

Peter Glenn Ski and Sports:  Over 60 years of getting you out there

10 Barrel Brewery:  Buy their beers, they support action sports more than anyone

23:30:  Jumps, and how he injured himself, how it impacted Woody, and the immediate aftermath

29:00:  Finding out he will never walk again, the pain, the support of his parents and Lacy, other people’s reactions to the injury, and going to the BC Championships 3 weeks after surgery

39:30:  Alpine Vans:  Upgrade your adventure, Upgrade your life

Elan Skis:  Over 75 years of innovation that makes you better

41:00:  Everything you were afraid to ask about paralysis, his arms are his legs, retrofitting or not, and the expense of it all

50:00:  Getting back into the mountains,  getting into racing, crashing, and being humbled on the World Cup circuit

57:00:  Paralympics in Whistler, the Paralympic hangover, X-Games and Tom Morello

It's time to talk some shit on the Powell Movement.

0:13.5

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:17.0

I'm your host Mike Powell, and this week I'm not going to shit all over the Epic Epic Pass or the crappy deal that the Park City Ski Patrol Union settled on.

0:24.5

Why? Because people who have icon passes that go to Crystal Mountain have been emailing me just as pissed off as the Epic Pass holders who were emailing me last week

0:33.9

and I don't want to ignore them because they are my people too. And here is one of the

0:37.7

many emails I received that outlined the problems at Crystal Mountain. Last season, obviously

0:43.6

with the Rona shit, reservations were required, pass holders were allowed 10, and it was a

0:48.6

fucking refresh scramble just to get days from my 11-year-old daughter and I. Finally, the last few weekends were reservation-free.

0:56.9

All late spring, summer, and early fall, we got constant emails about Renew Now.

1:01.7

Tell your family and friends, lock in unlimited access type shit.

1:06.0

Fast forward to now, and shit started off smooth.

1:08.7

And of course, it gets busy.

1:10.4

So last week, they sent out an email

1:12.3

saying due to popular demand and to give the best in class experience, they said they were going to

1:18.1

require reservations for all pass holders. Only seven resis instead of last year's 10. Fast forward

1:24.8

three days due to negative feedback. And I'm guessing they've decided to change

1:29.1

to parking reservations and only two at a time. Like that's any better. I'm a single dad to a sweet

1:35.1

ripping girl just trying to provide her the dream and barely able to afford it. It's so worth it,

1:40.4

but this is complete fuckery. So what this email tells me is that people spent their good money on icon passes because they

1:46.9

want to ski Crystal, and it's arguably the best mountain in Washington terrain-wise.

1:51.7

And after a season full of frustration, traffic, and parking issues that have always plagued
