Summary

Kathryn Smith is the Global Brand Director at Skullcandy. Her resume is one that most people would be jealous of, but like everyone with a great title, a lot of hard work was put in to get Kathryn to her position today.  On the podcast we talk about growing up in North Carolina, ski bumming, getting gigs, losing them, and a whole lot more.  It's the first business episode I've had in a while and it's great!

Mmm, baby, it's time to talk some shit on the Powell Movement.

0:07.0

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:15.0

I'm your host Mike Powell, and this week there are so many things to talk about right now.

0:20.0

First off, we have the whole

0:22.1

systematic racism issue. I've talked about this. My thoughts have been, don't be a racist. Teach

0:28.8

your children to not see skin color. And if you see something, say something. There is nothing

0:34.1

wrong withouting the racists. But even folks who I know and believe not to be racist at all, I mean, friends of mine have said to me, Mike, but don't all lives matter?

0:44.7

And it's like, yeah, you fucking idiot, all lives do matter, but this isn't about saying that you don't matter.

0:50.6

It's realizing that you have no idea what a person of color goes through on a daily basis,

0:55.5

and there are so many things that they experience differently than you and I. I'm not saying

0:59.7

your grandmother or cousin doesn't matter. It just doesn't matter right now. So there's that shit,

1:05.5

and then we have the virus. Well, it looks like science was right. Everything seems to be spreading again, but the funny

1:12.4

thing about it this time is that no one seems to be caring at all about it. I mean, in the

1:17.3

beginning of this shit, there's one case in Seattle and the whole country, me included,

1:22.8

goes into full panic mode. Lately, we've been averaging 30,000 new cases a day, and it's no big deal. It's time to

1:29.9

open up Applebees. So that's kind of scary, but what's getting scarier for me is this podcast.

1:36.0

I started this thing with the goal of documenting the history of the lives of those in action sports,

1:41.8

and to do so, I had to quit my job to follow this dream because I knew

1:45.6

I could be one of the best at this. And things have been on the rise steadily for the past 180 episodes.

1:51.5

My numbers have never been higher. My guest list is both diverse and all time. But the one thing

1:58.0

with starting a new business is that you have to make money doing it. And I've had some great sponsors to make this show happen over the years. But the one thing with starting a new business is that you have to make money doing it.

2:01.3

And I've had some great sponsors to make this show happen over the years.
