Summary

LJ Strenio has been a fixture in the ski world for a decade.  He puts out multiple video parts every year, competed for a while, won an X-Games medal and is known for him destroying gnarly urban features.  While skiing is everything to LJ, it's not his only passion.  Years after earning his first degree, LJ is back in school, studying computer science and currently employed by NASA.  Yes, that NASA.  It's an awesome podcast

Welcome to the Powell Movement. I'm your host, Mike Powell, and this week my guest is a guy who I've casually known for at least a decade.

0:21.7

I'm talking about LJ. Strenio.

LJ is a guy that I used to see when he would come to the K2 offices to visit his sponsors,

0:28.8

line skis, and full tilt boots.

0:30.8

He always came off as a really likable kid who was always doing something.

0:34.8

He was on the ramp, in the gym, building something, mounting something.

0:38.7

He always looked busy. He'd be there for a few days and then head off to film for his edits in the

0:43.9

traveling circus, various video parts, and X Games Real Snow. LJ has a mixed bag of tricks that fit

0:50.3

into all types of ski content. Some relatable stuff, some creative stuff, and a lot of absolutely gnarly urban shit.

0:58.1

While I don't know LJ too well, I'd see them on the road at times, and one incident that

I remember clearly was at the O'Raj Masters in Whistler.

1:06.8

This is a theme-based competition where team managers are part of the team, and points are given

1:12.0

out not only based on tricks, but how the team works together in order to carry out the theme.

1:17.8

The year I'm thinking about, K2 had a hot dog the movie theme, and it was fucking amazing.

1:23.0

We stole the show in terms of thematics and should have won again.

1:26.3

I wore a full-on hot dog costume,

1:28.7

and not a cheesy one. I had a full Disney-worthy hot dog costume with room inside to have a bullhorn.

1:35.1

So I'm on snow, mid-mountain in the finish corral, and I'm generally being an idiot. It made for

1:40.7

some pretty amazing pictures. And while I was sitting there, L.J. Strenio runs up behind me and kneels down.

1:47.3

Sleepy Joe Schuster pushes me over and I fall pretty hard.

And they start sprinting away from me.
