Deborah Fallows logged 100,000 air miles between 2012 and 2017.

The couple visited 25 cities for two weeks each with shorter stays in two dozen more places. Shades of de Tocqueville,

Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, and John Steinbeck. The result is a book with a title alluding to

Thornton Wilder, Our Towns, plural instead of singular. They were looking for the character

You were flying in a Cirrus, a plane that has a parachute in case something goes wrong, a parachute for the whole plane.

Was that needed reassurance for you?

I am not the natural pilot in the family, so it's a great thing to have in reserve, in my mind,

for the night before flight.

It really eliminates all worries, but the parachute is not something that you want to deploy.

Obviously, it's just for extreme

circumstances, and we never did deploy it. But other people have, and it has saved their lives. So it's
