And this week I'd like to talk a bit about preparing for your first bonefish trip.

This is for those of you who have never caught bonefish but don't really relish the prospect of fly fishing in 20 degree air

temperatures but you're you're a sicko enough that you that you got to have some

fly fishing during the winter so you go south to catch some bonefish or maybe try for some permit.

And there, before your first bone fishing trip, there's some things that you really need to get prepared for.

You're going to spend a lot of money on a bone fishing trip. It's pretty tough to do it on the cheap unless you have relatives who live in the

Bahamas or in Belize. And you're going to travel a long way most of you so you need to be prepared and

you just have more fun the more prepared you are the more fun you'll have on

your trip and the less frustrating it will be for you.

The first thing you've got to be able to do is you've got to be able to cast 40 feet and you've

got to be able to pick up line and quickly cast 40 feet accurately. I know you can probably get

the line out there 40 feet, but I mean 40 feet reliably accurately.

You don't really need long cast for most bone fishing.

Occasionally a 60 or 70 foot cast is going to get you out of trouble,

but most bonefish are caught between 30 and 40 feet

from the boat or from the waiting angler. But you've really got to practice your casting. Don't

go down there. If you haven't cast for a year or two or if you're a novice

caster without practicing because you'll be frustrated.
