Hi and welcome to the Orvist fly fishing guide podcast. Previously we talked about

fly fishing in the wintertime and I mentioned that

midges are very important to the winter flyfishers. So let's go into a little more

detail on fishing midges.

First of all, I don't want to hear you talk about the fact that you can't see these little things,

you can't thread them, you can't see them on the water fishing

small dry flies takes a little bit more patience yeah it might take you a little

bit longer to tie on the fly but if you use a big eye hook, which has a bigger eye that allow you to thread it easier, and you take your time,

make sure you have plenty of light and get yourself a pair of good, strong close-up glasses if you have trouble

threading the fly.

Most readers or reading glasses come in like a 1.5 power, a 2 power, and sometimes you need more

than reading glasses to thread on these tiny flies.

We actually developed a pair of reading glasses called the

super magnifiers just for tying on fly small flies and fly tying at

Orvis and they're called the super magnifiers and they come in a 4X and 5X magnification.

So there's really no excuse for fishing these tiny flies to be to be scared of fishing these tiny flies.

And then everybody says, oh, I can't see that fly when they're on the water.

Well, I got a surprise for you.

Most people who fish tiny midges can't see them on the water.
