2023 has been an active one for the horror genre. The year is only a third of the way over

and there have been releases up plenty. Some of them like Evil Dead Rise have been big at the box

office and most have not. But theatrical release is a tough ride for genre movies,

especially the independent ones.

The familiar titles are what the industry

loves to call IP for intellectual property

are what feed the big screen most successfully.

And every original horror film that dies at the box office

is another nail in the coffin of original horror movies at the cinema.

But the evolution that continues at such a high rate means that streaming has replaced the drive-in and the independent theaters and art houses.

So it just means that you have to search.

Podcasts and websites that bring attention to horror movies are

plentiful and provide an opportunity to discover these little gems that you might never have seen

without their help. There is no community like the horror community for word of mouth information,

and the discourse, though often rowdy, is filled with varying opinions of varying

bloviations. You soon learn which of these voices coincides most closely with your own opinion.
