Summary

DB-Dec22,2021:The number of new cases in South Africa has slowed in recent weeks and is down more than 20% in the past week, pointing to the probability that the Omicron variant has reached its peak. Perhaps this may not be that bad after all. Alfonso Peccatiello is in Holland under a strict lockdown, and he is joined by Darius Dale of 42 Macro on the Daily Briefing to discuss the lockdown conditions and the potential effects it would have on the economy. Meanwhile, Elon Musk announced he would be paying $11 billion in taxes this year as he continues offloading Tesla stock. However, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched a probe into Tesla vehicles’ ability to play games on the giant tablet in the car while driving, making these vehicles incredibly dangerous on the road thanks to their ability to distract drivers. 22nd of December, 2021, and half the author of the macro compass. And I'm here with the one

0:10.8

and only Tarius Dale, which is the CEO and founder of 42 macro. Hi, Darius. How are you doing?

0:16.9

Alpha, what's up, man? How you doing, brother?

0:19.1

Yeah, it's okay here. We're in lockdown here in the Netherlands. So

0:34.5

So if you want to go to the restrooms, or you can't, if you're going to do sporting or you can't,

0:39.8

the Omicron situation has complicated things for the healthcare sector in the Netherlands.

0:44.0

So they were pretty late with boosters shopped and compared to the rest of Europe.

0:48.9

And unfortunately, the situation got out of hand. So they just decided to tighten in,

0:52.7

which is very unfortunate as festivities are coming, but I guess we can't get around it.

0:58.4

Are they making a distinction between the ongoing Delta wave and the Omicron wave adding to that?

1:04.9

Or are they saying, hey, look, COVID is COVID. We don't care.

1:08.0

Well, they first started tightening in on the upside of the Delta wave itself.

1:12.8

And then when Omicron came on top, they just said, okay, well,

1:15.9

if you look at the projections of ICU hospitals, we're not doing good.

1:20.4

The interesting part is that if you look at the intake of Omicron patients in the ICU,

1:26.1

it's not extremely large, and especially the recovery period of these patients out of the ICU

1:32.1

seems to be much faster than it was with previous waves.

1:35.7

So people take generally like only 20% of the time they took in previous waves to get out of ICU.

1:42.5

So apparently the symptoms are a bit milder than they were before.
