Summary

Romans 8:28-30 — The believer in Christ is caught up in a grand trinitarian story between the mutual glorification of the Father and the Son. This cosmic story of God’s glory bestows unbelievable benefits upon unworthy sinners. When the Christian is united with Christ, all God purposed is guaranteed and the Son will be glorified in the salvation of His people. In this sermon on Romans 8:28–30 titled “To Glorify Christ,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones connects God the Father’s grand purpose in the glorification of His Son to the ultimate grounds of assurance. Dr. Lloyd-Jones assures that based upon the apostle Paul’s words, every detail in the believer’s salvation – foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification – will be accomplished in perfect detail. Furthermore, Dr. Lloyd-Jones works through the biblical texts across the New Testament and comes to a clear definition for the controversial term “foreknowledge.” With consistency and care, he argues that the term means God setting His love upon His people. Moreover, there is very little difference between the biblical teaching of foreknowledge and the doctrine of predestination. Listen as Dr. Lloyd-Jones gives believers unlimited grounds for assurance.

We resume our studies in the Epistle to the Romans by looking again at the words

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

For, whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his son that he might be the

first born among many brethren. Moreover, whom he did predestinate them he also called, and whom

he called them he also justified, and whom he justified them he also glorified. Now, I would remind you of what we are doing here and what the apostle

is saying. I must recapitulate the argument for a moment. The fundamental thing that he's

1:05.0

concerned about as a pastor is that these Romans should have a full assurance of their salvation, that they should know

1:13.8

that whatever might happen to them, that all things work together for good to those who

1:21.6

are Christian. God overrules everything. Doesn't matter what happens. Everything is overruled by God for the good

1:30.9

and for the benefit of his people. And these are further described as those who love God,

1:37.8

and they're further described as those who are the called according to his purpose.

1:43.3

Now then, the theme is that the ultimate and the final source of assurance of salvation

1:51.2

is that we are in this purpose of God.

1:56.4

We've had many other arguments to give us assurance in this chapter.

But here we rise to the topmost level.

2:04.4

It is the purpose of God that we should be brought to a state of final and complete salvation

and entire deliverance from sin and from evil.

2:19.3

Very well.

So the great point is this purpose of God.

And what he's told us is, we've been considering this,
