Summary

780: PGA Master Professional Joe Hallett returns to Golf Smarter because he wants to help all of us be better golfers. Being a PGA Master Professional means that he’s one of only 200 PGA Members that are the teachers for PGA Certified Professional Instructors. He also has joined forces with the PerfectMotion app we’ve been talking about to provide you with instruction through the app. Joe usually charges $150/month to work with you through the app, but mention “golfsmarter” when you request having Joe provide instruction and you’ll get the “Even Par” special of only $72 for a month of remote coaching, or only $225hr when you visit Joe in person at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Academy in Franklin, TN. Joe’s website is https://www.joehallettgolf.com/ Learn more about PerfectMotion app for iOS or Android at https://perfectmotion.io/ This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 96 we open our scrap book to 2009, when the Presidents Cup was held at Harding Park in San Francisco. The next day, Golf Smarter listeners drove North across the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County (home of host Fred Greene) to play 18 holes at Peacock Gap Golf Course. After our round, we gathered for dinner and a live conversation between listeners and our special guest, Jesse Ortiz of Bobby Jones Golf. This was just around the same time the USGA made their ruling on wedge grooves that was the first step to controversial bifurcation (different rules for the Tour Pros and amateurs). Next week, tune in to hear Fred’s recordings from the sounds of play at that President’s Cup event in San Francisco. This episode was #200 of Golf Smarter from October 2009. We don’t replay every Golf Smarter episode for Golf Smarter Mulligans because, in this case, the previous two episodes were discussing technology and websites that are no longer relevant or available. For exclusive content and first access check out Corrected Mistakes on Substack: https://substack.com/@correctedmistake  Learn more about your ad choices. I had a LPGA rookie that spent the last week down here with me.

And she has a grip that notoriously, it's just a gorgeous start it down the middle, fades about three yards. And she goes, every time I try and draw the ball, I really get in trouble. And I said, why? And she goes, you've seen them. They don't draw. They go further right than any shot you've ever seen. And I said, exactly. And all we literally did was change one little thing in her grip. And she went, oh my gosh, that's all I need? Should I use this on every show? I said, why would you? The only club that you have a little interest in drawing is this one. And every time you try and draw it, you end up blocking the ball 20 more yards offline. the rest of your stuff, it's a nice little fade. Why wouldn't you play that?

All of a sudden, she went, yeah, this is pretty cool. It's kind of like I got this little nuance I'm going to create. And now I know the ball, when I try and hit a draw, it'll either go straight. It'll draw a little, but it won't go somewhere where I got a lot of work in front of me.

Welcome back to the Golf Smarter podcast, Joe.

1:23.0

Fred, how are you, man?

1:24.3

We're at least getting to talk on a little more regular basis.

1:28.5

And the only problem on your behalf is that I'm not sure I can accumulate enough information

1:34.4

if our in-between times are shorter. I didn't really need a year or two to gather up enough stuff.

1:40.2

Oh, come on. I'll throw in a second quarter, Joe. You know it'll just turn you, get you going. We don't need much to get you going. That's why I love having you on, because it's not just that you get going. You have a wealth of information to share that is just, you need to tap in. And as long as we keep doing this, I'm rapidly approaching that age that someday my filter is going to go off.

And then you'll really hear the real truth, like Bob Toskey at age 95. So you can do that if

2:07.3

you want to, but you might as well take up tennis. Thank you, Mr. Toskey.

2:12.5

Well, maybe we'll do this one, a late night and have a couple of shot classes. And we'll

2:16.9

throw in a couple words that every time you say something like that, we'll have a shot and one will really

2:22.1

get you going.

2:24.6

That has to be at night.
