Summary

779: Roger Gunn, PGA returns to Golf Smarter to respond to host Fred Greene’s concern that increased yardage is a double edged sword. Of course we all want to hit the ball consistently, but we often speak of how much better we’d be if we could only hit it farther off the tee. There’s a lot more to gaining distance than a new club. It’s club head speed, flexibility, body type, proper mechanics, and fitted clubs. Let’s say you’ve achieved that distance, now you have to make adjustments with every club in your bag. Not so simple, right? If flexibility is an issue for you, then don’t miss this week’s Golf Smarter Mulligans (read on)! This week on Golf Smarter Mulligans episode 95, Katherine Roberts, a longtime friend of GOLF SMARTER discusses her book "Swing Flaws and Fitness Fixes" where she provides tips, drills and advice on how to improve flexibility, strength and stamina. Do you realize how important your breathing is to your success on the course? We talk a lot about breathing and how it can impact your focus and power, plus she provides a stretching exercise to use during your round to remove tension and keep you loose. For exclusive content and first access check out Corrected Mistakes on Substack: https://substack.com/@correctedmistake  Learn more about your ad choices. You want it to start somewhere else and head toward the target.

0:07.0

For a draw, that means it has to start to the right.

For a fade, it has to start to the left.

0:13.0

We don't want our fade to start at the target, because now it's going to go away from the target.

Then theoretically, I need to aim the club face to the left

0:21.5

when I'm fixing to hit a fade because I need it to start left. The question would be, wait a minute,

0:27.0

do I just turn the face in because now I'm going to hook it? No, you set the club face to the left

0:32.1

and then you set your body more left than the club face. So your swing is going left of where the face is looking.

0:39.3

Now the ball is going to cut. The face and the path have to be different from one another to curve the ball.

0:44.3

So if I want it to curve to the right, I need to swing to the left of where the face is looking.

0:50.3

That cuts across it and puts a fade on it. So the aiming the club face to the left

0:55.2

of the target ensures that the ball is going to start to the left. Golf Smarter number 779.
