I'm Carla Marie, and today is Thursday, September freaking 1st, 2022. The Core 4. The four headlines you need to know.

Don't call it a comeback. Mainly because it wasn't. Sarah Pillon, who shot onto the national political

scene when she became John McCain's running mate in the 2008 presidential election, attempted to get back into the government by throwing her name in the ring for Alaska's special election for their lone seat in the House of Representatives.

Unfortunately for Palin and her supporters, her comeback bid fell short as she lost Alaska's first statewide

election decided by ranked choice voting. The winner was Democrat Mary Poltola, who became

the first woman to hold Alaska's sole seat in the House of Representatives, as well as the

first Native Alaskan to serve in Congress. With ranked choice voting, the process takes a little

longer than the voting that we're normally used to. Had Peltola won 50% of the first round vote,

the process would have ended. But since she didn't, election officials went back to the ballots

and eliminated the candidate with the fewest votes. Those ballots are then recounted in favor

of the second choice on those ballots.

Peltola hung on to her first round lead and was then named the winner of the special

election after the votes were recounted.

But Palin and Peltola might face off again in November since this special election only

fills this seat for the next two months,
