Mark 9: 41-50 - 'If your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off.'

Catechism of the Catholic Church Paragraphs:

- 1034 (in 'Hell') - Jesus often speaks of "Gehenna" of "the unquenchable fire" reserved for those who to the end of their lives refuse to believe and be converted, where both soul and body can be lost. Jesus solemnly proclaims that he "will send his angels, and they will gather . . . all evil doers, and throw them into the furnace of fire," and that he will pronounce the condemnation: "Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire!"

Hi again, everyone. Welcome back to the podcast. We're looking at quite a fascinating reading today.

0:16.1

So as always, we want to dive into the text to help you understand what it probably meant in its original

0:21.5

context. So today's reading at Mass is Mark chapter 9 verses 41 to 50. Here's the text.

0:31.5

Jesus said to his disciples, if anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you

0:40.2

solemnly he will most certainly not lose his reward.

0:45.4

But anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith would

be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone round his neck.

0:55.0

And if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off.

0:58.8

It is better for you to enter into life crippled than to have two hands and to go to hell,

1:05.0

into the fire that cannot be put out.

1:07.8

And if your foot should cause you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life

1:13.5

lame than to have two feet and to be thrown into hell. And if your eye should cause you to sin,

1:20.5

tear it out. It is better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two

1:26.5

eyes and be thrown into hell where their

1:29.3

worm does not die nor their fire go out.

1:34.3

For everyone will be salted with fire.

1:37.3

Salt is a good thing, but if salt has become insipid, how can you season it again?

1:43.3

Have salt in yourselves and be at peace with one another.

1:48.0

So a really interesting reading that we have here today, and it's particularly interesting because we don't always get to hear this reading at mass.

1:56.0

This Thursday of week seven in ordinary time only occurs in some years because in other years

2:01.9

it's actually overridden by the feasts associated with Lent.

2:06.2

So it's actually quite rare that you will get to hear this particular reading.
