President Donald Trump will sign an order today to close the Education Department.

Let's get you caught up with today's seven stories.

President Trump is set to sign a much-anticipated executive order today.

It will direct Education Secretary Linda McMahon to take all necessary steps to facilitate

the closure of her department.

Trump has already cut the agency's workforce nearly in half. That has affected

its ability to handle major operations such as student loans, testing, and civil rights complaints.

The administration has also worked to cancel dozens of grants and contracts. But completely shutting

down the education department will take a lot more than an

executive order. It would require congressional approval, and that would take 60 yes votes in the

Senate. Right now, Republicans hold 53 seats. Trump has repeatedly talked about his desire to return

authority over education to the states.

But state and local governments already provide about 90% of the funding for education,

and set most of the rules.

Number two, we found some intriguing details in the John F. Kennedy assassination files.

Yesterday morning, the Trump administration released thousands of documents related to the

1963 assassination of President Kennedy. Since then, our reporters have been combing through the files day and night.

The documents mostly contain information that experts already knew.

And so far, nothing comes close to upending the official explanation

that Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone gunman in the killing.
