It's Thursday, March 19, 2006. I'm Albert Moller, and this is the briefing, a daily analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview.

0:14.1

I want to tell you right up front that I have waited until the very last moment to record this because I wanted to know what the House of

0:21.8

Lords would vote on one of the most important issues laden with moral concern to face Britain

0:29.0

in a very long time. It is a bill that would effectively authorize a woman to seek an abortion

0:36.2

or to bring about the abortion of her baby all the way up

0:38.5

until the moment of birth and as of last night it was adopted in such a way that it was passed

0:45.6

on without amendments that were attempted by some to strip that provision out of larger legislation

0:51.9

this is really a very dark day And the lessons here are not just for

0:55.7

the United Kingdom, for Britain. The lessons here are for all of us. And we need to take stock of what

1:01.1

has just happened. And we need to understand how it happened. First of all, the immediate question,

1:05.8

how did it happen has to do with the history of this legislation. This particular provision

1:10.6

was worked into an omnibus

1:13.6

law concerning legal reform there in England under the leadership of the Labor Party in control

1:20.3

the House of Commons. So, in other words, this was not a standalone bill that would have removed

1:25.2

all criminal considerations for a woman seeking an abortion

1:29.0

in a late-term pregnancy. That's not the way this went through the House of Commons. It went through

1:33.3

the lower house, the House of Commons as simply something that was buried in a larger piece of

1:38.2

legislation, something we all have to watch all the time. And sometimes that kind of radical action can be embedded in something else.

1:47.0

And so a lot of people in Britain, a lot of people in the UK didn't even notice that it happened

1:52.0

when it happened months ago. They just didn't notice. It took some time for the notice to take effect.

1:57.0

And so you had pro-life activists and others who were just crying out and saying,

2:06.6

look, this is a disaster. This is a moral meltdown. This is the culture of death and overdrive. And so next, there were efforts undertaken to try to turn the bill back or radically to revise it
