Hey there. From the KUOW Newsroom, this is Seattle now. I'm Paige Browning, writing out another warm

summery day in Seattle and prepping for this Saturday's highs near 90.

Starting with a termination at SPD, Seattle's police chief has fired Officer Daniel Otterer, the police officer who appeared

to joke about the death of an Indian American grad student. Interim Chief Sue Rar announced

her decision publicly, a somewhat unique move for police chiefs. Officer Daniel Otterer was caught

on body camera making insensitive comments about John V. Candula, who was killed

when a different officer was speeding and slammed into her. KU.O.W. investigative reporter

Ashley Huroko says the chief was pretty clear about why she fired him.

The impact of him laughing and participating in what some have, you know, described as gallows' humor was so devastating that it couldn't be mitigated by the fact that this was supposed to be a private conversation between two colleagues.

For his part, Otterer has said his comments were taken out of context.

Kandula's death sparked widespread community outrage and raised critical questions

about police conduct. King County officials gathered in a cool wooded area southwest of Seattle
