It was another big twist in the tale of Trump's tariffs.

Yesterday afternoon, the president announced that he was temporarily reducing new tariffs on most of the world to 10%.

That's down from previous rates as high as 50%, which took effect only yesterday.

But the 90-day pause doesn't apply to China, where Trump escalated his tariffs even higher

yesterday to 125%. Nevertheless, the announcement of the pause sent the stock market on a wild rally.

The S&P 500 closed up 9.5%. It followed days of market turmoil, including some concerning moves in the bond

market. U.S. Treasuries are usually seen as a safe bet for investors, so an unexpected sell-off

seemed to foretell an even bigger global financial crisis. That was making people queasy, as Trump put it

yesterday. Between Tuesday evening and Wednesday afternoon, Trump and his advisors spoke to Republican

lawmakers and top foreign leaders. They raised concerns about a worldwide recession. So Trump reversed course.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said it was all part of the plan.

But this was something certainly we've been talking about for a period of time,

and we decided to pull the trigger.

And we did it today, and we're happy about it.

But the pause raises new questions.

Less than four hours before the announcement,

Trump posted on his social media platform, Truth Social.
