Summary

A shift begins in Jesus’ ministry as He prepares His disciples for His death and resurrection by explicitly telling them what will happen and equipping them for what will come. And even though they don’t quite get it yet, the examples they provide in Luke 9 still model for us simplicity in ministry, the cost of discipleship, and a trust we should all strive to have in Jesus.

People are fickle, and you see that with celebrities and movie stars and athletes.

You know, one minute they're great, next minute they're hated, then they're great again.

But what's interesting about that is that's kind of the thing with Jesus.

Jesus in Luke's gospel, you kind of see it as well as just about any of the four

0:22.7

Gospels. Jesus is gaining in popularity up to this point in our study of Luke. The multitudes

0:31.6

are coming, you know, by the droves, wanting to see Jesus and hang out with Jesus. But it's chapter 9 where we're going to

0:39.3

start to see a change in that. People are going to be a little turned off by some of the things

0:43.5

that he says, some of the notions that would sort of count costs. Like if you're going to follow

0:59.8

of is what's the popular message versus what is true um because jesus would say things that were only true

1:07.6

but not everything he said was popular um that's something for us to kind of tuck away

1:12.6

and keep in mind, because I've noticed our world likes to go with what is popular, and we go with the

1:19.1

trend. But as Bible students, we should always say, we don't care about what's popular. We care about

1:25.0

what's biblical and what is true. Jesus is going to start

1:28.5

speaking true things that turn people off. And it's really, from this point forward, we start

1:33.6

to see the journey to Jerusalem where Jesus would be crucified, and it starts to get more

kind of, I guess you might say, negative by the people's response in some ways from Luke

chapter 9 and onwards. So, you know, the honeymoon sort of, if you would, is over. All the

miracles Jesus has been doing, they're not going to produce real faith. We've seen that as a theme

throughout the story. So let's pick it up. Chapter 9, verse 1. Then he called his 12
