My guest today is Kirstina Reiner Hansen.

Kirstina is a painter originally from Denmark now living in Carmel, California.

She got her BFA in graphic design and illustration from the Colding School of Design in Denmark.

Her work has been shown in numerous galleries across the United States and in Europe.

Most recently at the Jack Fisher Gallery in San Francisco, Art Now Gallery in Berlin, and

Zow B Art Center in Chicago.

She originally painted observational realism but then moved to

more experimental and expressive style. She transitioned by moving to more gestural work,

painting with much more emphasis on expression and surprise.

In this episode we talk about making that shift and what it felt like.

There's often fear in making big changes in painting styles, particularly when the artist and courage, confidence, and an intense drive.

Now her process melds collage and photographic elements to allow for that surprise.

Part of her work process is closing her eyes, picking collage elements randomly, and then assembling them into a painting.

Kirstina and I explore several topics, including her experience as a self-top painter, the pros and cons of getting an MFA,

and keeping your audience updated while leaving yourself the space to be creative and to play.
