| 0:49.6 | That transportation changed our sense of mobility around the country. |
| 0:53.2 | It changed our sense of, it changed the nature of cities. |
| 0:55.8 | If you look at the cities that were constructed on the east coast before the invention of the automobile, |
| 1:00.2 | they're all vertical cities, right, with mass transit. |
| 1:03.1 | You get to California, we have one of those cities called San Francisco. |
| 1:06.1 | That's a pre-car city, but Los Angeles is post-car. |
| 1:09.7 | And that car, the invention of the automobile, meant that we didn't have to be tightly aligned |
| 1:14.8 | in high-rise buildings with close to all the same amenities connected by rapid transit. |
| 1:20.8 | Instead, we could be all across the county and we could just drive where we needed to go. |
| 1:25.4 | So suddenly cities became much more horizontal and much less vertical. |
| 1:29.0 | What's happening here? Well, a way we live, how we live, how we think has been changed by technology. |
| 1:34.8 | This happens for every generation. |
