Summary

Len and Kotaku's Luke Plunkett dig into the logistics-laden recent expansion and patch for Hearts of Iron 4 with No Step Back and the Barbarossa Update. How has it changed how we play, and how does HoI4 feel different now compared to launch? We also go into the joys of playing wacky scenarios with historical focuses switched off and making the dumbest tanks the engine will allow.

Good evening. You are listening to Three Moves Ahead. I am your host for this week, Len Hafer,

0:05.7

and I am joined here by Kataku's Luke Blunkett.

0:09.4

Hello, everybody. Nice to be back.

0:12.3

He is one of the only people I know that has played more Hearts of Iron 4 than me.

0:16.7

So I brought him on to talk about Hearts of Iron Four's gigantic recent expansion, No Step Back, which completely reworked the supply and logistics systems, finally updated the Soviet focus tree, long time coming, and a lot of other stuff.

0:36.4

Luke, how are you feeling so far about no step back from what

0:40.5

you've played of it? I'll start with some caveats first. This might be a long list. I've obviously,

0:49.3

I've only been playing this for a couple of days. We've been like at Kataka, we've been pretty

1:15.3

extensively check any of this out over, you know, dozens or hundreds of hours

1:20.0

of playing it with different factions and different wars and whatever.

1:23.6

That said, everything I have played for the last two days has been excellent.

1:31.4

Who have you checked out so far?

1:33.3

Okay, so I started obviously with the Soviets, because that's like the emphasis of this faction.

1:39.4

I fired up a game and then I remembered really quickly why I never ever play as the Soviet Union because I find it daunting. I find the number of territories and the side, the number of land

1:51.4

borders to be just so, I don't know, I just can't do it. I think I've only played like

1:57.7

two games as the Soviets ever. So I fired it up. I started playing it.
