Summary

Rob, David Heron, and Troy "It's dignity, gah - don't you even know dignity when you see it?" Goodfellow get together to talk about strategy games that don't take 100 hours to play. Whether you're burned out on the sprawling grand strategy games that take up more time than most community college degrees or you just don't have enough time left in the day after pursuing your community college degree, shorter games can be better. But why aren't there a lot of compact, quick-to-play strategy games? Why does the general gaming public hate the ones that do exist? Our panel tries to crack the case of the easily digestible strategy game and ultimately leaves slightly depressed.

So today we're going to be talking about one of the most asked, frequently asked questions

0:24.5

to the Three Moves Ahead email.

0:27.6

And a question that I just get a lot, and I suspect you get a lot as well, Troy, which is that

0:41.1

some sort of epic length grand campaign? And that's part of tonight's topic. But the other part

0:47.2

of it is this. When I'm asked this question, I usually struggle to answer it because I don't feel

0:53.9

like particularly these days, if you're talking about like PC strategy games and war gaming, I don't feel like it's an embarrassment of riches when you're trying to sort of satisfy like this need.

1:06.0

And so that's the other thing I want to talk about is, you know, first, like, what games would we

1:11.0

recommend? But then also, am I the only one who feels like there's kind of a dearth of the

1:17.3

short-form strategy game, the short-form war game, especially on PC? And, you know, if there

1:23.2

is that sort of lack, what's behind it? And so I just wanted to sort of throw it open to you.

1:29.8

You know, first of all, do either of you have sort of immediate go-to responses when you get this question?

1:35.1

You know, for the person who, you know, who has kids, a busy job, who only has, you know, a few hours of strategy gaming in a week, where should that time be spent?

1:47.2

I mean, I go to, I mean, it is a very hard question to answer,

1:51.4

but my go to is generally interested in war games.

1:53.6

I just recommend war games with really good scenario campaigns

1:57.0

or that are chopped up into nice little bits.
