Summary

Open your folder of fanfic and scroll down to the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K crossover you've always wanted to publish, the one where the dark elves fight space marines with acid spitting aliens and dragons flying through the sky next to the Serenity (for good measure). Now close that that .txt file, open Heroes of the Storm, and behold: Blizzard have brought your dreams to life! Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo come crashing together in the MOBA/LOMA that promises to be faster to play, easier to learn, and cost more than other, similar titles. Rowan Kaiser and David Heron join Rob to talk about the current state of HotS and whether it lives up to Blizzard's lofty goals.

Tonight, we are welcome back once again, our friend, game designer David Heron of the Game Design Roundtable podcast. David, welcome back.

Oh, great. Thanks.

Hello.

0:17.3

So the three of us have been playing a game together from time to time.

0:21.6

We've been spending quite a bit of time playing Heroes of the Storm, the Moba from Blizzard,

0:26.7

that actually breaks with a lot of Moba convention as we've come to know it through games like League of Legends and Dota 2.

0:34.7

But the real impetus for this conversation, I think, is a discussion that David and I had a few weeks ago at Pax East, as David began to hold forth, as he has wont to do, about why here's of the storm is not quite the casual moba for everyone that it sort of presents itself as, and certainly that I've begun

0:57.0

treating it as. When I look at it, I think it's the fun, casual light moba for people who don't

1:03.7

want to play a game like it's their job. But David, you didn't quite, you feel that there's a

1:10.3

veneer of casualness over this game

1:12.8

that the design itself perhaps belies, and I'm curious to hear a little bit about that.

1:19.1

Oh, I mean, you put a couple of cocktails into me, and I'll talk about anything for a couple of

1:24.9

hours, and we sat down at a hotel and and I said I'm playing

1:32.0

Heroes of the Storm and you and you looked at me you said oh great let's sit down and listen

1:36.8

to Dave tell us why the games we love are terrible and I said no no no no no no I've put like

1:42.7

500 games into this thing.

1:44.6

I'm really enjoying it.

1:46.7

And I do.

1:47.8

I really like it.

1:50.3

Moba's to me, I started back in when they were mods.
