Summary

Jenn Cutter comes back for a discussion of F1 2011 with Rob and Troy. Learn about exciting rules changes, the difference between a racing game and a motorsports game, and some of Codemasters crucial fumbles that keep F1 2011 from being a clear-cut improvement over its predecessor. Also, tire strategy means F1 2011 is a strategy game, and is therefore a totally valid topic, and not pure self-indulgence from Rob.

Good evening. You are listening to Three Moves Ahead, and I'm your host, Rob Zakney.

0:04.1

Joining me tonight for a special racing episode is Recent F1 Convert, Troy Goodfellow.

0:09.1

Yes. We should probably explain the topic in a bit and why we're doing it, but here I am. Recent F1

0:14.9

Convert. Yes. And welcome back once again, our friend, Racing aficionado, and writer Jen Cutter.

0:21.5

Hello, it's good to be back, guys.

0:23.8

Yeah, so as I promised slash threatened many months ago, I did want to occasionally take

0:29.8

3MA on a detour into other specialty topics that are near and dear to my heart and happily

0:34.9

have become near and dear to Troy's.

0:38.0

And now that F1, 2011 has been out for several weeks and we've had some time to reflect on it,

0:43.3

the time seems right to take a week's break from strategy games to discuss another worthy niche,

0:47.8

the motorsports game.

0:49.3

We're going to be discussing F1211 in particular, but I think with Codemasters F1 series, it's worth considering

0:55.9

what makes these games distinct from racing games, and to use Tom Chick's term, car PGs, like,

1:02.0

say, Forza. Before we delve into that, though, I wanted to start with you, Jen. So what did you

1:07.5

think of F12010, and where did you think F1 2011 needed to go?

1:12.9

I actually thought 2010 was a pretty solid package.

1:16.6

I've played a lot of the other F1 games, not the EA series, but Codemasters did a version on PSP for 2009.

1:23.4

That was brutal.

1:25.2

Granted, there were severe limitations on the PSP. And then there was the

1:29.5

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, one of the Liverpool studios, did in addition of 2006 or something

1:36.8

that got ported to PS3. And that was really interesting for other reasons. But anyway, I liked

1:41.4

2010, and I'm not sure the 2011 is as much of a step forward as it could have been. Yeah, that's kind of been my reaction to, actually. Like, F12010 was one of those games that the more time I spent with it, the more highly I thought of it. And before 2011 came out, I was really excited because, you know, from where I said, having logged, God, like, you know, 50, 60 hours into F12010,
