Unfortunately, it has to be said that when one group of people present in the U.S. is punished for specific speech,

it endangers Americans' ability to speak freely.

Cater's David Beer and Tommy Barry explain why. We assume that by virtue of your

existence in the United States, whether you are citizen or not, that you carry certain abilities with you,

that rights will be respected, whether or not you individually might possess those

rights or face some sort of legal sanction for exercising them. In the case of speech, it seems that

police agencies and the federal government are making use of speech that certain people have made,

who might have legal status here,

but legal status that is less secure than something like citizenship.

The Trump administration is revoking green cards,

student visas, work visas, based solely on speech. So the statute being invoked here is quite explicit

in its willingness to trample on the First Amendment. And it says you can be targeted for

beliefs, statements, or associations that are lawful within the United States,

but which the Secretary of State, Marco Rubio in this case, has deemed adverse to the foreign policy of the United States.

So what we have already seen is individuals being detained, arrested, and

incarcerated in the United States for authoring op-eds, for engaging in protests,

speaking on behalf of protesters. These are all things that, you know, have occurred already.

And, you know, we expect, and certainly they're announcing more of these types of actions to continue.
