Summary

Some 200,000 children, young people and vulnerable adults suffered abuse while in social care in New Zealand over the last 70 years, a landmark investigation has found.

New Zealand's prime minister says it's a "dark day" for the country. We'll hear from a survivor of abuse in the system about the impact it's had.

earlier today following the publication of a major report into abuse in the care system.

The report found that over the past 70 years one in three children and

vulnerable adults were abused in both state and religious care systems that's

more than 200,000 people. Those with disabilities or from the indigenous

Maori and Pacific Islander communities were particularly badly affected.

The report is the result of the biggest and most expensive inquiry ever held in

New Zealand, taking six years to put together and costing around $100 million.

As Prime Minister Christopher Luxen reacted to the findings, he spoke directly

The state was supposed to care for you to protect you, but instead's subjected you to unimaginable physical, emotional, mental and sexual abuse.

disturbing story. 62 year old Bernie O'Donnell spoke to us earlier.
