0:21.0	Today, only three original copies of this version of the Bible exist, but there is one undeniable truth.
0:36.0	This so-called slave Bible was created to indoctrinate and oppress enslaved black people.
0:44.0	How did white missionaries manage to do this?
0:52.0	In 1807, English missionaries went to the British West Indies to convert enslaved people to Christianity.
1:01.0	Rev. Bill B. Portis, Bishop of London, instructed missionaries to shorten prayers and to select scriptures that encourage enslaved people to obey their masters.
1:14.0	But of course, that wasn't hard to do given one important fact about the way Europeans manipulated the Bible.
1:23.0	They edited the Bible.
1:25.0	Heavily.
1:27.0	Of the 1189 chapters in the Bible, only 232 remained.
1:35.0	Specifically, any mentions of equality or freedom were removed.
1:42.0	And that's not all.
1:45.0	They also used ideas of anti-blackness and white superiority to inform the way they translated the Bible.
1:53.0	The English created the King James version of the Bible, just as they did in all their literature and art.
2:02.0	The slave Bible was an attempt to control black people by leading out anything that might inspire ideas of liberation in our people.
2:11.0	There's an unholy alliance between lies and omissions from history and religion.
2:18.0	And recognizing this truth is crucial if we'll ever get truly free.
2:25.0	In order to move towards the future, you've got to look to the past.
