Summary
Ben and Ernie ask a question that strikes fear into those who don't budget (and sometimes to those who do): can I afford this? At least for YNAB'ers, this question isn't about whether you have the dollars and cents in your bank account to make the purchase, it's about your emotion, how you feel about buying the thing in question versus something else. As Ben explains, it's about opportunity cost, and luckily YNAB is very good at helping you understand opportunity costs with your money.

| 0:00.0 | Hello, Weinabbers. My name is Ernie with another episode of the Weinab podcast where we |
| 0:10.1 | teach you four rules to help you stop living paycheck to paycheck, get out of debt, and |
| 0:14.8 | save more money. And I'm here once again with my co-host, Ben Jesse A. gave us the keys |
| 0:22.2 | to the castle for the summer while he's away so we are taking over his podcast and for |
| 0:27.4 | those of you that don't know Ben and I, we have our own show called Budget Nerd, so you |
| 0:32.6 | can subscribe to that wherever you listen to this podcast or you can go over to YouTube |
| 0:37.1 | if you want to see our somewhat pretty faces over there. Say for yourself, Ernie. |
| 0:44.9 | Oh man. So today we're talking about a question that Weinab helps you answer. The question |
| 0:52.1 | is, can I afford this? Sometimes we say that this is the scariest question in the entire |
| 0:59.0 | world because it's a question that we have to ask ourselves every single day, multiple |
| 1:03.3 | times a day, whenever we buy something, can I really afford this? And it doesn't just |
| 1:08.8 | mean, do I have the money for it? It means, do I want to spend this money that I have |
| 1:15.4 | on this thing right now? Is there something more important that I'm not considering? |
| 1:19.9 | I would say for most Weinabbers, especially Weinabbers listening to this podcast, it's |
| 1:24.8 | not a math question at all. There's probably thousands of dollars, you know, thousands upon |
| 1:30.8 | thousands sitting in their checking account right now. |
| 1:33.2 | You Weinabbers are to sit in on a pile of cash. I mean, you have the money to basically |
| 1:37.3 | buy whatever you want. So you're not asking, do I actually have the dollars and cents |
| 1:42.5 | for this purchase? There's some other question going on in your head. |
| 1:49.3 | That's the question of opportunity costs. My favorite economic term that I love to talk |
| 1:54.9 | about. You do love talking about this. And I always forget, explain opportunity cost |
| 2:01.1 | to me once again. So the idea is the true cost of purchasing something is not the amount |
