Summary

I’m starting a new series called Darin’s Diary. Every Monday, I’ll be sharing something real that I’m learning about God as I dig into His Word for myself. This isn’t secondhand from pastors, mentors, or books — it’s me opening up my Bible, wrestling with what it says, and sharing how it’s changing my walk with Him. In this first episode, I’m talking about a verse that completely reshaped the way I see God: John 1:14 — “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Growing up, I thought I understood God’s love, but when I read this verse in its original context, it hit me in a whole new way. For the first audience — both Jews and Gentiles — this was shocking. Unlike the distant gods of the Greco-Roman world, Jesus stepped down, put on flesh, and lived among us. That changes everything. This episode is all about rediscovering God’s love in a fresh way — the kind that makes you fall in love with Him all over again. My hope is that as you watch, you’ll see that God isn’t distant, He’s close, and He cares about every detail of your life. Let me know in the comments what stood out to you most, and don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss future episodes of Darin’s Diary. Learn more about your ad choices. I thought I knew God until I read this verse and this verse actually made me fall in love with him all over again once I read it in this context.

But the verse I'm speaking of is John chapter 1, verse 14, when it says, and the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

Now, what's really powerful here that I found isn't necessarily what's being said, but who it's being

0:21.7

said to. So when we look at this in context and ask ourselves what this would have meant to

0:26.5

original audience, what I found was this is John, and he's writing to a mixed audience of Jews and

0:32.0

Gentiles. And that's important because the Gentiles that he's writing to grew up in a Greco-Roman

0:36.8

world, which means that

0:38.6

they grew up learning about all these Greek gods when it comes to Apollos or Zeus, fill in the blank.

0:44.5

And so when they're hearing that the word being Jesus became flesh and dwelt among us,

0:50.7

this would have been radical to them. This would have completely shocked them, rocked their

0:55.9

world, and been different from anything they ever heard of because the guys that they grew up

1:00.1

learning about in terms of in Greek mythology, they never became close. They never came off

1:07.6

of their throne to make them known to the people. They never sacrificed or

1:11.9

gave. Like their religion and their worship and their walk with these gods was all about

1:16.5

appeasement and doing things to get into their good graces. But it never signified that they

1:24.2

came close. And so when they're hearing that Jesus became flesh, they were like,

1:30.8

oh my goodness, there's a God that would actually do this for me. Like there's a God that would

1:35.4

inconvenience himself to come and meet me where I'm at. I've never heard of anything like that

1:41.4

before. And so when I was reading this, it just made me realize, like,

1:47.3

you know, you've heard about the whole idea growing up in church, at least for me, in John 3, 613,

1:52.3

right? This infamous verse of God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son. But I think

1:59.1

after understanding John 114 in this context, it brought God's love
