We're self-creating emotional pain by resisting reality and wishing something were different that's out of our control because it's already happened or it's already happening.

And I said, dad, I can't change that I was in a car accident.

I can't change that I broke 11 bones and I have permanent brain damage.

And if the doctors are right, I can't change that I never walk again and I'm in a wheelchair the rest of my life. But the five minute rule says it's okay to be negative, but but not for an extended period of time. In fact, I was taught by my mentor. Set your timer for five minutes and give yourself five minutes to fully feel what's coming up. Don't suppress your emotions. Don't do what the doctor thought I was doing and go, no, no, it's fine, it's fine, I'm fine, it's fine, don't worry, it's fine, right?
