One of the most high-profile events in Washington, D.C. came under fire on Saturday night.

Authorities say a gunman started shooting near a security checkpoint at the White House

Correspondence Dinner, and law enforcement shot back.

A secret service officer was struck but was wearing a bulletproof vest and has since been released from the hospital.

At the time of the shooting, thousands of guests, including senior politicians, journalists, and other public figures, were gathered in that ballroom.

President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance were quickly evacuated

to safety while most others in the crowd ducked under their tables and shielded themselves

behind chairs. The suspect is now in custody and it's believed he acted alone. He's been identified

as a 31-year-old mechanical engineer and teacher from Southern California. Shortly before the

shooting, law enforcement officials say he sent a

manifesto to his relatives. He called himself a friendly federal assassin who wanted to target
