The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

We must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes.

We should take nothing for granted.

I think it's fair to say history has since vindicated Eisenhower.

But at the time, this warning shocked people.

The so-called military industrial complex spent the following six days

consolidating power and influence in Washington to an extent that is, I think,

genuinely damaging both to our democracy and our foreign policy.
