Summary

In this episode, Lindsey is talking with Miss America 2020 and Miss Alabama 2020! Camille Schrier, the current Miss America, broke from tradition when she demonstrated the catalytic decomposition hydrogen peroxide as her talent on stage during the competition. Her unique talent and performance and her focus on women in science tech engineering and math has sparked positive reaction for inclusivity in the Miss America program. Camille’s story has been shared with hundreds of children, and viewed by millions, and she is proud to be known as ’the Scientist.’ Tiara Pennington, the current Miss Alabama, is only the second African American winner of Miss Alabama in the history of the competition. Tiara shares the responsibility she knows she carries as she inspires young women of color. She also talks about her psoriasis advocacy and why this disease affects many more people than some think, and why she feels personally connected.

I will tell you this. I am a graduate of the Miss America system. I won my local title,

1:04.5

even when we are miles apart or even when you're in the audience and I'm up on stage. The lessons that I learned

as a contestant within the Miss Alabama system, I would not trade for the world. Back when I was

1:22.9

competing, I actually was campaigning. So as a part of the Miss America program, you have to have a platform was what we called it back then.

1:32.5

And now they call it a social impact initiative.

1:36.6

So you have the opportunity to pick a cause that you are passionate about, that you want to share with the world.

1:46.3

I chose hands-on science in the classroom because I realized that most people cannot learn science

1:54.6

from a textbook.

1:55.8

You cannot learn how to be a good engineer or you cannot learn how to build and construct. You cannot

2:05.3

learn chemistry without performing the act of chemistry. And so I wanted young children to

2:16.2

continue experimentation because one of the things that we see within

2:21.1

the education system you take a three-year-old or a five-year-old and you say what do you see

2:27.1

and how can you explain it they have tons of ideas for what they see and how we can explain it

2:34.0

and they can also make connections

between oh well i saw this happen before and then you can start creating those scientific
