Part 1. Here we go. We talk about

about. We talk about feedback quite a bit you and I because we keep running into managers who

have difficulty giving negative feedback even though they realize that they need to do so.

But it's just hard.

And one of the things that drives them away from giving feedback is that they don't want

to have long conversations with their directs.

Yeah.

They've tried it before.

They've seen something that was wrong.

Their direct has told them, hey, I want to know more about how I'm doing, right?

So they sat down, they broached the subject, they tried to make it really easy, and it turned out to be this long, painful conversation.

directs, they just react in a way we wouldn't like them to.

Right, and a lot of managers assume that because they believe in the model, the model makes

sense to them, that therefore the directs should respond only to the

model rather than to their history with feedback.

The manager says, hey, listen, I'm willing to tolerate some mistakes and they even say

to themselves, look, the only reason I'm giving

this negative feedback to this guy is because he said, repeatedly he asked me, please tell me how

I'm doing. I'd rather know than not know, if it's bad please go ahead.

Right, but I've done it so poorly in the past that as soon as he asked me, now I'm just going to

assume that he knows my good intent.
