On his first trip abroad to the Middle East, Trump solicited hundreds of billions of dollars in investment pledges from the Saudis.

He accepted a $400 million jumbo jet,

gifted to him by Qatar. He's both escalated regional tensions by ordering air strikes on Iran's

nuclear sites and attempted to de-escalate tensions by persuading Israel to pause the fighting

in Gaza after two years of war. He's pursued an end to Russia's war on Ukraine, first by

scolding Ukrainian President Vladimir

Zelensky in the White House, then by holding a summit in Alaska with the Russian President

Vladimir Putin, and always by threatening to cut the Ukrainians off unless they give in to

Russian demands. Finally, Trump appears to be gearing up for war with Venezuela. He's deployed a naval

armada off its coast and ordered

boat strikes in the Caribbean Sea. Trump has marked his first year back on the global stage by

engaging the world with an unpredictable mix of instinct, grievance, and ego. But let's start with

international trade. Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has unleashed an unsparing global trade war,

dramatically hiking tariffs on allies and rivals alike. They've been rolled out so

chaotically that in April, while announcing tariffs on almost every nation on earth,

Trump slapped tariffs on, quote, a group of barren, uninhabited volcanic islands near Antarctica,

covered in glaciers and home to penguins."
