Summary

Jesus does something radical in John 4:1-29 when he takes a planned detour to Samaria – a place where Jews typically would not travel – to speak to a woman who typically would not be spoken to. As we see this story unfold, we learn why Jesus did such a shocking thing, what the living water He offered the woman was, and how we, too, can obtain it as we receive salvation from Jesus Christ.

John Chapter 4.

0:15.8

Before we read this amazing, beautiful story in John Chapter 4, I feel like we've got some work to do maybe

0:22.4

on some history, because it'll help us understand some of the nuances we might otherwise miss

0:43.9

It's quite a story, really, the Samaritan people.

And it starts way back, you know, remember when the children of Israel finally was free from slavery in Egypt?

0:53.7

They made their way after a long

0:55.0

wilderness wandering and finally crossed the Jordan River, you know, from the east, into the west

0:59.7

and took over the land of Canaan. And that all, you know, happened right around 1,200 BC-ish

1:07.4

when the Jews took the land of Canaan. And the 12 tribes settled in that region. Of course,

1:14.2

you know, the two and a half tribes, Ruben Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh, they settled on

1:19.6

the east side of the Jordan River, bad idea, by the way. But the other half of them in Manasseh and

1:25.7

Ephraim, they settled in the middle part of Israel and all the other tribes kind of scattered in Israel. But the other half of a Manasseh and Ephraim, they settled in the middle part of Israel

1:28.0

and all the other tribes kind of scattered in Israel.

1:31.2

But the reason this is important is that the two tribes, Ephraim and Manasseh,

1:35.4

that region would eventually become known as the region of Samaria.
