The Wedding Singer was released as a Drew Barrymore Adam Sandler vehicle in 1998.

It was the first of three movies that Barrymore and Sandler would star in together.

The Wedding Singer was a smashing success, made for only $18 million and making $123 million worldwide.

Sandler had recently proven himself to be more than a Saturday Night Live, darling,

but to be a box office success on his own, with hits like Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore.

But Wedding Singer was his romantic comedy turn.

Sandler would go on to make Punch Drunk Love in 2002, just four years later,

which would prove to the world that he was in fact capable of being a brilliant,

serious actor as well. But I don't think that you get Punch Drunk Love without the

wedding singer in 1998. And Barry Moore was at the height of her powers in 1998 as well.

Her opening scene in Scream, which had come out the year before,

was an instant cult classic. And the world had known and loved Barrymore since she was

seven years old in E.T. In 1998, Barrymore started the wedding singer, ever after, and home fries, following those

with never been kissed in 1999 in Charlie's Angels in 2000.

I tell you all this to say that the wedding singer, today's movie, was a mainstream motion picture. These were two adorable young stars in

their prime. Romantic comedies were at their height. This is five years after Sleepless in Seattle

in the same year as you've got mail.

I also think it's important to note, Barrymore and Sandler are two stars who avoid political statements.

When I think about their celebrity personas, I think about Sandler bearing his soul, grieving the death of his friend, the comedian Chris Farley.

And he car wheeled round the room and slowed ass with a cleaning lady.

He was a one-man party.

You know I'm talking about, I'm talking about my friend Chris Farley.
