Michael Morgan McDermott, born Michael McDermid Martinez on September 4, 1958 in Marshfield, Massachusetts,

was the second of four children born to Richard and Rosemary Martinez, who both worked as teachers and prominent members of the local historical society. Michael grew up helping his parents in their community group, was a member

of the school's AV club, and was considered quite the popular classmate amongst his peers,

whom he graduated alongside in 1976.

That same year he graduated, Michael enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served in submarine training school until September of 1977, when he was assigned at a nuclear power training unit in Idaho Falls, served as an electrician aboard the USS Narwhal from April of 1978

to April of 1982, and then was finally sent to the personal support detachment at the Naval
