Some victims are chosen at random.

Others are picked to make a crime that much easier to commit. On September 27, 2012,

a serial killer in Russia took his last victim, an elderly woman who, trusting, let a man into her

home and was easily overpowered. So if you like your coffee hot but your bones chilled, sit back and start

your day with a morning cup of murder. From March of 2011 to September of 2012, the elderly

women living in and around the Volga and Ural federal districts of Russia lived in fear

of an individual called the Volga Maniac.

Each of the victims, of which there were 32, were single women aged between 75 and 90 years old.

This individual would infiltrate their apartments and homes, pretending to be an employee of a utilities company

or in social service, and then strangle these women with an item found inside of their home,

like a bathrobe belt or his own hands. When the women took their last breaths, he would then

steal any money or valuables he could get his hands on and flee the scene undetected.

The first nine murders all took place in Kazan.

There was one survivor who was likely saved by the fact that she was blind and could not identify her attacker.

Two more murders took place in April 2012, two more in Samara before May of that year,

and by August 1st of 2012, there had been a staggering total of 18 murders.
