Speaking of conclave, well, actually speaking of Rome and the Holy Church, I was reminded of a story a close friend told me several years ago about a friend of hers that happened to be an incredibly wealthy heir to some European shipping fortune.

And he just spent his life quietly doing whatever the hell he wanted.

This rich guy isn't the party in Abiza type.

He's closer to an Indiana Jones type.

In terms of curiosity, at least.

I don't mean to imply that he's out there getting into adventures with the fate of the world at stake.

At least not that I know of.

And you know what? even if you were,

you wouldn't know about it. He's that type of guy. The reason I bring this up is because, again,

about 15 years ago, my friend told me a story about this rich guy. He wanted to explore the Vatican

archives. Yeah, that heavily guarded super secret vault beneath the city

that houses all of the church's secrets for the last thousand years or so.

So, Rich Guy sent representatives to the Vatican and asked simply how much.

Eventually, they actually settled on a price, and Rich guy was granted access, chaperoned, of course,

but granted access to the most sensitive documents, artifacts, works of art, and God knows what else,

that the church has collected, protected, and hidden away for centuries.

So, it's in this vein and in honor of the fallen Pope and is yet to be named successor

that I offer you all today, a history of the Vatican Archives.
