When Daniel moved back into his mother's house, he did not expect to inherit a history.

The neighborhood had always seemed ordinary to

him growing up, planned streets, modest homes, cul-de-sacs planted, where orchards once stood.

The valley sat just below the mountain pass, where settlers traveling west would have descended

out of timber and rock into something that finally resembled promise.

By the time Daniel was born, the farms were mostly gone,

replaced by subdivisions built over soil that had been turned and replanted for more than a century.

It was only after returning as an adult that he began looking at the land differently.

His mother had bought the house in 2002, back when Daniel was still in high school. At the time, the lot felt new, untouched, safe. The home itself had been

built only a few years earlier, part of a planned development laid over what had once been

Orchard Rose. No one spoke about what came before orchards. No one seemed interested.

The first strange thing did not happen immediately. In fact, nearly two years passed before anything

unusual occurred, and even then it was small enough to dismiss. His younger brother had come home

late one night to grab something from his room.

He had gone upstairs in the dark, not wanting to wake anyone. When a girl's voice spoke his name

from the bathroom adjacent to the hallway, it had not whispered, it had not echoed. It had simply

said, hey, followed by his name, as clearly as if someone stood in the doorway.

He ran. The next morning, he asked their mother if she had been awake. She had not. Daniel had shrugged it

off at the time. Houses make noises, old plumbing knocks, sound travels strangely at night. It was easier to believe that than anything else.
