0:19.2	At first glance, the topsy turvy doll looks like a black rag doll, but when you lift her dress,
0:26.3	instead of legs, there's a white doll's head. Flip it over, and now it's a white doll.
0:33.2	There's a lot of mysteries surrounding this strange toy.
0:36.6	The doll first appeared during slavery and was played with by both enslaved black girls and white
0:43.2	girls. After slavery, the doll was still popular. But why? There are many theories.
0:50.6	One is that they were used to teach black girls how to be subservient to white girls.
0:56.6	Another is that they were used to teach black girls how to care for white babies
1:02.0	since many black women were forced to serve as wet nurses. But it could be even deeper than that.
1:18.9	The doll could have been used to normalize white men's sexual coercion of black women,
1:26.0	and the biracial offspring that sometimes occurred. It also could have been a tool that
1:32.9	showed the perceived differences between white and black women. So what's the real story behind
1:40.4	this doll? No one knows for sure, but we do know the doll is a symbol of white supremacy,
1:47.6	reflecting the subordination of black women to their white counterparts.
1:52.2	We are part of a system that continues to create creative ways to oppress us.
1:59.5	We must understand these attempts so we can fight against them.
