Summary

Have you noticed that success has started to look… uniform? The slick-back bun, the gold hoops, the structured blazer, and the calm, composed tone of someone who’s perfectly 'aligned'. In this week’s episode, I look at how ambition has become an aesthetic, how this new era of women is blending success with balance, and what that says about the pressures we still carry.

From the 1980s dream of 'having it all' to Gen Z’s obsession with boundaries and self-care, I explore whether this polished image of success serves us or simply hides the work still happening beneath the surface.

It’s not a critique as such, more a reflection on what success really looks like when we strip away the uniform.

🎧 Listen for:

  • The rise of the 'slick-back bun economy'
  • How each generation redefines ambition
  • The quiet cost of appearing perfectly balanced
  • Why true success might be less visible than we think

disposition. And you may too have noticed that ambition has become an aesthetic. I was in London today,

0:35.4

I was walking around and I saw lots of young women sporting the same

look.

0:41.7

Now, let's just be honest, that is not a peculiar or bizarre thing.

0:46.6

That has been, that's fashion, that's style, that's trends, that is something that has

0:50.3

been happening for decades, for centuries, however long you wanted to go back.

0:54.5

But I think there is something about what I'm calling the slick back bun economy,

0:59.9

that I just think it just really stands out for me, and I'll tell you for why.

1:05.0

So, okay, just paint the picture.

1:07.5

You've got lots of girls wearing slick back, it's really hard not to say

1:11.6

slick black bun, so I'm going to try to really enunciate. Slick back bun. They've got the gold

hoops, usually quite chunky. There's usually a shoulder padded jacket or a Mac. There's almost like

1:23.8

a calm, deliberate tone and the projection of that aesthetic. And there's sort of the very

1:32.5

smart, like I said, Mac and Blazer, or there's the ath leisure wear and the baseball cap. But the

1:39.8

aesthetic is trying to say something. And I think what it is saying is I've got my life together

1:46.6

I've started to notice that success particularly for younger women now very much has a uniform

1:54.3

it's very clean it's very polished it's instantly recognisable and success is now an identity

2:00.4

and correct me if I'm wrong, but I just don't think

2:03.7

it has been that way in the past. It's not just a look, it's a language, it's a generation's way of
