Coming up next on the Lord's Day edition of renewing your mind.

Sins like murder, abortion, adultery, stealing in the New Testament are seen as

a grigious sins against God, carrying out awesome weight of guilt with them, but never so much guilt that they are unforgiven or unforgivable.

Then what was the sin Jesus talked about in Luke chapter 12, the infamous unforgivable sin?

It's something that has caused concern for believers in every generation.

Today on renewing your mind, Arcee Sproul returns to a series through Luke to address this in Jesus called blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.

We're going to continue now with our study of the gospel according to St. Luke, we're in the 12th chapter,

and this morning we will be reading from verse 8 through verse 12.

Also I say to you, whoever confesses me before men, him the Son of man also will confess before the angels of God,

but he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of man will be forgiven him, but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven.

And when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer or what you should say.

For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say. In recent weeks and these passages that Luke has given to us from the discourse of Jesus, we've encountered what I called some hard sayings.

There's probably no more hard saying in the New Testament than that one in which our Lord warns against committing a sin that cannot be forgiven in this world

or in the next. And so we need to give particular heed to our Lord's teaching this morning as we look carefully at this text that has been preserved for us by the inspiration of God, the Holy Spirit.

Let's pray.

Our Father and our God, again, we need your help to understand the complexity of these things that have been taught to us by our Savior.

But we know that you search the deep things of God and it is your pleasure to illumine them to our understanding and for our redemption. So help us now in this hour to grasp the things that Jesus taught for we ask it in His name, Amen.

If you notice in the last couple of sections that we've looked at here in Luke's Gospel, there has been much concern in the teaching of Jesus about the relationship of people's mouths to their hearts.

We see that he gave a vehement denunciation against the Pharisees, the scribes, for their unparalleled hypocrisy because they said one thing with their lips and did something else with their lives.

They confessed one thing with their mouths but believe something else in their hearts. So there was a disjunction, a disconnect between what they said and what they did.

And then he went on to say that we are in danger of a judgment on the final day when all of the words that we've said in secret in this world will be made manifest and brought to the light in that judgment.
