| 0:00.0 | Welcome to 10 minute Bible Talks, where we connect the Bible to your life. |
| 0:08.9 | In the time it takes to get to work. I'm Patrick Miller. |
| 0:12.7 | What is the ultimate hope of the Christian life? I'm pretty sure that the first time I heard |
| 0:18.0 | about the concept of heaven, it was from Looney Tunes. You know, Wiley Coyote or Yosemite or Elmer Fudder, whoever gets killed in the cartoon, and they end up floating on a cloud playing a harp in heaven. I mean, it's kind of funny when I think about it because those cartoons were pretty dark, but that's besides the point. From that point forward, other things started to shape my idea of what the ultimate |
| 0:37.6 | goal of a Christian was. I somehow got the idea that the ultimate goal of a Christian is to die, |
| 0:42.8 | to become a soul, and to spend eternity on a cloud somewhere in an unending ethereal worship service. |
| 0:49.9 | And if I can be honest, I found that totally boring. Jesus, yeah, I found him interesting, but heaven, a royal bore. |
| 0:57.3 | I remember reading Huckleberry Finn in high school and thinking that Huck kind of got the measure of things. |
| 1:02.6 | In the story, Ms. Watson describes to Huck the good place. |

| 1:11.8 | the good place but it has the exact opposite effect on huck huck explains she went on and told me all |
| 1:18.5 | about the good place she said all a body would have to do there was to go around with a harp and sing |
| 1:23.7 | forever and ever so i didn't think much of it. But I never said so. I asked her if she |
| 1:29.0 | reckoned Tom Sawyer would go there, and she said not by a considerable sight. I was glad about that |
| 1:34.6 | because I wanted him and me to be together. Of course, it's supposed to be a funny quote, but it illustrates |
| 1:40.6 | a profound problem. If the goal of the Christian life is unappealing to you, |
| 1:45.2 | then you'll never embark on the journey. Or if you do, you'll never stick with it. So I have some |
| 1:50.6 | good news for you. The Bible never once says that going to heaven is the goal of the Christian life. |
| 1:56.4 | I welcome you to do a Google search or use AI or whatever tool, and you'll find out that I'm |
| 2:01.3 | right. The Bible mostly talks about heaven, not as a place we go when we die, but as the place |
| 2:06.9 | of God's throne and God's reign. In the Bible, heaven is kind of like his control center from |
