Until Friday last week it's unlikely you'd have heard of Mark Smith. Mark Smith is a diplomat working in Dublin as a counter-terrorism officer, but he previously says he worked across the Middle Eastern North Africa department for the foreign office and had a

Specialism in advising on arms export licenses.

In the months since October the 7th, the career diplomat

had become increasingly uncomfortable with the flow of arms from the UK to Israel.

When he raised this internally at the Foreign Office, he says he was rebuffed.

So last Friday afternoon, he sat down at his computer

and typed the reasons he could no longer stay in his job.

In his email he was absolutely scathing about the way in which the assessment had so far been made by the foreign office that there was no breach of UK

arms export licensing law in the decision to continue to sell arms to Israel.
