Unicorns are commonly understood to be horses that have a single horn emerging from their

forehead. Today they are a prominent part of pop culture. They appear in

illustrations, many of them for children. They feature in books and cartoons and

appear as costumes. They are often associated with rainbows and other

emblems of cuteness. Some even say that unicorns poop rainbows and they're associated

with the New Age movement and other social movements. But despite their popularity today,

unicorns have deep roots in the past,

including a long association with the Christian faith,

and modern ideas about unicorns are very different from those of the past.

So what are unicorns? What did people believe about them?
